High blood pressure leaves no clues. Get yours checked.
High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, it is estimated that 4.2 million people in England have high blood pressure without knowing it.
New data has revealed that worrying numbers don’t know the potentially fatal effects of high blood pressure – 41% unaware that, if left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, and over 22% being unaware that it can cause strokes and heart attacks.
The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get a blood pressure test, which is a free, quick, simple and non-invasive procedure.
If you're aged 40 and over, you can get a free blood pressure check at your local participating pharmacy, without needing to book in advance.

What happens when you get your blood pressure checked?
A pharmacist, or member of the pharmacy team, will wrap a blood pressure cuff around your upper arm to measure your blood pressure. They will then share the result with you.
Depending on the result, they might:
- give you advice to support healthy living
- give you a blood pressure monitor to take home with you and return later
- advise you to see a GP
If you’re registered with a GP surgery, your GP health record will be updated.
Your GP surgery can also take you blood pressure.
