Lung Health Checks in Halton

People across Halton will be offered a free lung health check to catch cancer early, when it is treatable. After a successful phase 1, which including certain areas of the borough, more people are now being offered the potentially life saving lung health checks through the Targeted Lung Health Programme.

The NHS recognises that lung cancer is an area where early diagnosis is desperately needed to help improve survival and NHS Lung Health Checks are therefore being offered. As well as helping to diagnose lung cancer at an early stage, lung health checks will also help identify other lung conditions.

Who is eligible to attend?

Residents of Halton will receive an invitation for a NHS Lung Health Check if you:

  • are registered with a GP Practice in either Runcorn or Widnes
  • are aged between 55-74 years old
  • your GP has a record of you being a current smoker or having ever smoked

It is important that your Smoking Status is recorded correctly on your GP Record so that you receive an invitation. If you are not sure whether it is, please check at your next appointment.

You will be invited by letter for your free NHS Lung Health Check. If you receive a letter please follow the instructions in the letter to book your appointment either online or over the telephone. After this appointment you may be offered a low dose CT Scan at a mobile or static facility for further investigations if required.

Looking after your lungs

There are lots of things that you can do to look after your lungs, which are just as important if you already have a lung condition, including:

  • being more active
  • eating a balanced diet
  • stopping smoking
  • making sure you have all your vaccinations if you are over 65 years old or have a long term condition
  • knowing the warning signs and symptoms of lung conditions including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) and lung cancer.

Stop Smoking Service

If you're a current smoker one of the most important things you can do to keep your lungs as healthy as possible is to stop smoking. In Halton, the Stop Smoking Service are available free of charge to help and support you in stopping.
