World Down Syndrome Day 2023
The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
Down's syndrome, also called Down syndrome, is a genetic condition that usually causes some level of learning disability. Down's syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome in your cells. In the majority of cases it can't be inherited, and occurs by chance at the time of conception. A person with Down’s syndrome will have some degree of learning disability, but the level of ability will be different for each individual.
A human rights-based approach to disability
World Down Syndrome Day 2023 theme is With Us Not For Us.
The message of With Us Not For Us is key to a human rights-based approach to disability. A human rights-based approach views people with disabilities as having the right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else, working With others to improve their lives.
